Details About the Film

This film is part of the series Science on Screen®: Weird Weather

Tornado-obsessed meteorologist Jo Harding (Helen Hunt) and her husband Bill Harding (Bill Paxton), a former storm chaser turned weatherman, are estranged. When Bill travels to Oklahoma to get Jo’s signature on divorce papers, the two are forced to temporarily reunite so that they can test Bill’s advanced weather alert system that requires users to put themselves dangerously close to violent tornadoes. A veritable mix of awe-inspiring special effects and nail-gripping action sequences, Twister has endured for nearly 30 years as an absurdly entertaining exploration of extreme weather phenomena.

This screening will be preceded by a lecture from Patrick S. Market, Professor of Atmospheric Science at the University of Missouri-Columbia. Dr. Market's lecture, "The Reach of Twister," will discuss the prominent societal impacts of Twister in both popular culture and science education.
