After their son Hamnet dies from the plague in 16th-century England, Agnes (Jessie Buckley) and William Shakespeare (Paul Mescal) must contend with their grief. A healer and herbalist, Agnes must navigate caring for her surviving children, while William, a writer, struggles with reconciling his art with his family. Adapted from the eponymous novel by Maggie O'Farrell and directed by Academy Award winner Chloé Zhao (Nomadland), Hamnet is a meditative picture of grief, art, and the natural world.
"With a jaw-droppingly beautiful ending, Hamnet deserves all the accolades, and as big an audience as possible. Just remember to bring some tissues."
–Victoria Luxford, Clash Magazine
"There is no denying that Hamnet packs a visual, emotional and narrative punch, among the hardest-hitting this year."
–Hannah Rose, CBR
"Hamnet is another slow burn from Chloe Zhao, but when it really unleashes its magic it's an unstoppable force enhanced by Jessie Buckley's performance. A beautiful examination of mourning and artistic catharsis."
–Kristen Lopez, The Film Maven
