A Harvard anthropologist (Bill Pullman) is sent to Haiti to retrieve information on a strange powder that is said to bring human beings back from the dead. In his quest to find the miracle drug, the cynical scientist enters the rarely seen netherworld of walking zombies, blood rites and ancient curses. Loosely based on the true life experiences of Wade Davis’ ethnobotanical exploration in Haiti in the 70’s & 80’s, The Serpent and the Rainbow is a frightening excursion into the political climate of the time, Voodoo religion, and traditional Haitian practices. This screening will be followed by a panel discussion with University of Missouri researchers as part of Extra Credit.
