Details About the Film

This film is part of the series Extra Credit

Two years after the untimely death of beloved Mexican-American musician Selena Quintanilla-Pérez, actress Jennifer Lopez and writer/director Gregory Nava in collaboration with the Quintanilla family produced the 1997 hit Selena. Using cinema to cement Selena’s icon status, the film traces the rise of the Texas-born “Queen of Tejano music.” Nearly 30 years after its release, Selena remains rare for its representation of the plurality of Latina identity, the importance of family ties, and the deadly costs of fame.
