Saving Face

In public, Chinese American surgeon Wil (Michelle Krusiec) is a model daughter who hasn’t found “Mr. Right” yet. In private, she is still unable to come out as a lesbian to her traditional mother Hwei-Lan (Joan Chen). But… she’s not the only one with secrets. When 48-year-old Hwei-Lan unexpectedly becomes pregnant, she moves in with her daughter just as Wil has struck up a romance with ballerina Vivian (Lynn Chen). Celebrating its 20th anniversary in 2025, the feature debut of Alice Wu (The Half of It) is a heartfelt lesbian romantic comedy, a story of a mother and daughter finding common ground, and a beautiful ode to living freely.
