Doors at 6:30PM / Music & Film at 7PM
Part of new series American Music on Screen: In collaboration with the Budds Center for American Music Studies, American Music on Screen brings together music, film, and scholarship to foster dialogue around American music history. All screenings in this series are free and open to the public.
Aspiring tap dancer Bill “Corky” Williamson (legendary performer Bill “Bojangles” Robinson) meets up and coming singer Selina (Lena Horne) when he returns home after serving in World War I. When the young lovers are separated by their career ambitions, the pair find themselves with one last chance to be together at a star-studded musical show. Featuring more than 20 musical numbers with performances from great talents like Cab Calloway, the Nicholas Brothers, and Fats Waller, Stormy Weather is an unforgettable tribute to Black artistry in the face of Hollywood exclusion.
This screening will be preceded by a musical performance from the MU Jazz Combos and followed by a panel discussion with Dr. Megan Murph, Director of Budds Center for American Music Studies, Dr. Maya Gibson, Assistant Teaching Professor of Women’s and Gender Studies, and Dr. Sam Griffith, Associate Teaching Professor of Jazz.
Please note that FREE tickets for the public will be available at the Ragtag Box Office starting Wednesday, November 12 at 12PM.
No more than four free tickets will be given to one person.
A free ticket guarantees you a seat until 10 minutes before showtime and not after. If all tickets have been distributed and there are open seats at 10 till, we will start seating the theater from the waiting list (queue). Ticket holders will continue to be admitted at this time if seats are available. This policy allows us to start on time and give the audience a distraction-free experience.
