Blending fiction and documentary, the only feature film from radical Afro-Cuban filmmaker Sara Gómez is a profound portrait of post-revolution Cuba. One Way or Another’s loose narrative follows the nascent relationship between schoolteacher Yolanda (Yolanda Cuellar) and bus factory worker Mario (Mario Balmaseda) as they negotiate differing political and social values at their respective workplaces and with one another. Taking up the idea of revolution as an ongoing process that takes place at the level of interpersonal connections–friends, family, colleagues, lovers, students, and teachers–Gómez posits that the key to establishing a new social order lies in discarding patriarchal value systems.

Film Reviews

"The dialectical rigor and graceful matter-of-factness of One Way or Another makes it hard to believe that this was the director's first effort with the long format."

–Clara Miranda Scherffig, Screen Slate

"Life-changing cinema. Ultra-reactive, revolutionary, cathartic."

–Underground Opera Singer, Letterboxd

"Restored from its original 16-millimeter, the film looks terrific, and, despite its nostalgia for the ideals of the Cuban revolution, it feels as relevant today as it did in 1974."

–J. Hoberman, New York Times
