The Matrix

In the 22nd century, computer hacker Neo (Keanu Reeves) learns that reality is actually a complex computer simulation designed by evil artificial intelligence to enslave humanity. Neo joins rebel leader Morpheus (Laurence Fishburne) in the battle against the powerful illusion controlling humanity. With a screenplay literally opening and closing with the word “Trans,” The Matrix has come to stand as a powerful allegory for personal alienation and liberation, as well as universalizing the trans experience.

This screening will be preceded by a lecture from Dr. Quinnehtukqut McLamore, Incoming Assistant Professor and Postdoctoral Fellow in the Department of Psychological Sciences at the University of Missouri-Columbia. In this lecture accompanying Ragtag Cinema's screening of The Matrix, Dr. McLamore will be discussing how narratives and ignorance shape how we interact with the world around us and what implications that has for both ourselves as individuals, and the society we inhabit.
