A loose adaptation of the American novel King’s Ransom, Japanese auteur Akira Kurosawa’s domestic drama and police procedural High and Low stars screen legend Toshirō Mifune. Businessman Kingo Gondo (Mifune) is on the verge of becoming the majority stakeholder at a shoe company when he becomes the target of a ransom plot involving his chauffeur’s son. Praised as one of Kurosawa’s finest films, High and Low is a searing portrait of post-war Japanese society that has continued to influence the police procedural genre worldwide.
