After being tricked by a wicked sorcerer, Prince Achmed and his magical flying horse embark on a series of adventures. Based on stories from 1001 Nights, this silent, animated fairytale is the oldest surviving animated feature in the world. German director Lotte Reiniger used innovative silhouette animation techniques and one of the first multiplane cameras to complete this work. The Adventures of Prince Achmed is a unique hero’s journey that highlights the creativity and dedication of early animators and remains a crucial piece of silent film history.
This screening will be preceded by a shadow puppet/silhouette animation workshop.
